The event is on Fridays in June and children will get introduced to the joys of the outdoors by fishing, singing, eating s’mores, singing songs, constructing a bird feeder, and much more!

All classes will be held at the Adventure Park Shelter A in Powell, Ohio. Cost for the program is $38 for residents and $47 for non-residents. The tribute to those that have given the ultimate while serving our Country in the line of duty, will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. and run 12:30 p.m. finishing with a brief ceremony at Veterans Memorial in Village Green Park.

Ellis Island has been the welcoming point for millions of American immigrants over the years and Peter Boyer’s work of the same title will be the basis of Central Ohio Symphony’s May 25th performance. (Yvonne Stepanow, stock.xchng)

Executive Director Warren W. Hyer said the Symphony wanted to celebrate some of the diverse groups that make up the nation. The concert is built around “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” by composer Peter Boyer. The work, which includes slide projections from Ellis Island’s past and readings from the Ellis Island Oral History Project by several actors, is one of the most performed works in the United States over the last decade.

This performance by the Symphony will be the Ohio premiere of “Ellis Island,” noted Hyer. Accompanied by the Symphony, actors will portray the stories of seven individuals who came through Ellis Island in the early 20th century. Their experiences were collected through the Ellis Island Oral History project.

In addition to “Ellis Island,” the orchestra will perform “Dances of Panama,” by William Grant Still, one of the most performed African-American composers, “Aires de Mi Tierra,” by Puerto Rican composer Mariano Morales, brother of Symphony conductor Jaime Morales-Matos, and “The Plaza of the Ancient Village,” by Trevor Reed, a member of the Hopi tribe and Executive Director of the Hopi Music Repatriation Project. This will be only the second performance of Reed’s work.

“This concert presents through stories and music some of the many cultures and groups that have made this county,” explained Hyer. “We selected composers from many diverse populations to represent the broad tapestry of American music and culture. Too often we are comfortable playing and listening to music only from the mainstream classical collection, which is dominated by European influences. This concert is a chance to celebrate the contributions of other groups to the symphonic repertoire.”

Less than 300 tickets remain for the concert. Hyer noted that the Symphony has sold out both its debut and April concerts this season, a first for the organization. “We would be thrilled to sell out our final concert for the year,” he said. This small pony cart will sell following the blooded horse auction at Delaware County Fairgrounds on Monday.

The auction has been taking place in Delaware, Ohio, for 64 years selling standardbreds and in 2011 cataloged an amazing 3,120 horses. The auction begins at 9:30 a.m., with a special pony carriage to sell after the auctions.

“I swear it isn’t my fault about the cats.”

Ohio is among the five worst states for your cats according to the 2013 State of Pet Health Report which was released by Banfield Health Hospital.

According to the Report, Ohio’s cats live the nation’s shortest life span with an average of 10.9 years which is well below the national average of 12.1 years. Lousiana (11.0), Mississippi (11.1) and Kentucky (11.1) are right there with the Buckeye state at the dubious level.

Interestingly, while the Buckeye state continues to struggle with its waist-line its 19 per 100 of its cats are obese which is below the 23% national average. The most common diagnosis experienced for cats in Ohio are:

1. Dental Tartar
2. Fleas
3. Otitis Externa (ear infection)
4. Overweight
5. Gingivitis

Volunteers are invited to gather in front of Beehive Books, 25 N. Sandusky St., and are asked to bring gloves and a shovel or spade, if possible. Beehive Books is inviting all registered volunteers to enjoy a complementary iced tea afterward as a thank-you for their community service.

The planters were donated to Main Street Delaware by Oakland Nurseries, which operates locally at 25 Kilbourne Road. Main Street Delaware raises funds to purchase each season’s plants and to care for them.

Planter sponsorships are available for $150 (small) or $250 (large) for the growing season. To make a tax-deductible contribution, pick up a form at the bookstore or call 740-362-6050.

Olivia Judson

Judson, a research fellow in biology at Imperial College London, will discuss “Earth on Life: How Living Beings Have Made the Planet What it is Today,” at 7:30 p.m. in the Mulligan Hub of Ohio Wesleyan’s Stuyvesant Hall.
