Could Fracking Put You In Foreclosure?

As the Ohio legislature proclaims the economic benefits of fracking for those in Eastern Ohio a major concern to home owners has been exposed in a recent article published on EcoWatch.org.

“Home Owner Gas Drilling Leases: Boon or Bust” by Elisabeth N. Radow was published on March 7, 2012, and highlights the extreme negative side effects that are possible from entering into a gas lease. It is important to remember that EcoWatch is (obviously) focused on stopping fracking and the article may not provide a completely balanced argument, however I believe it does offer some interesting talking points.

Can A Gas Lease Put My Home Into Foreclosure?

Technically? Yes. The standard mortgage states that the home owner is to not deface the property in a way that would include creating hazardous wastes on it. However, will it actually cause you to lose your home? Honestly, I have a hard time seeing banks that are overwhelmed with foreclosure cases beginning to foreclose on properties that are current on mortgage payments because of gas rights.

My caution, would be though that we know the banks are greedy and a bank is more likely to foreclose if there is money to be made on selling the home — and gas rights make it very easy to make money on that city. So if you got gas rights, be careful as you might be on a foreclosure hit list from the bank.

Can I Get A New Mortgage on My Home With Gas Rights (Or a New Owner Get a Loan)?

Right this moment … the answer is rather hard to say. Based upon the reaction from the New York Times “Drilling Down Series” it appears the government is suspending FHA financing on homes that have gas line leases involved in the deal under NEPA until fracking’s effects are better understood. Which traditionally would leave the conventional market ready and willing to take on these folks … but … well … the conventional market has yet to fully recover from the housing melt-down. That limited recovery has placed a conventional sector that is still heavily reliant upon its loans being FHAish enough that if the loans had to be sold the FHA market becomes an option.

Which leaves those with gas line leases sitting on the outside looking in. Now don’t fear, there is a guarantee that before too long someone will fill the gap — that’s the American way — however those with gas line leases will pay more for the right to use those services.

So Should I Sign a Gas Lease?

That’s 100% up to you! However, I’d make sure to talk to your attorney to make sure you are covering your basis and dotting all the “i” and crossing all the “t”.

There are challenges with fracking, but they can be overcome with time, research and discovery. The key is too make sure you aren’t on the wrong side of the research when it all fracks out.

Four Delaware Area Students Earn Honors at State Competition

Four Delaware Area Career Center (DACC) Early Childhood Education Students recently competed at the statewide Family, Career and Community Leaders of America competition. All four students placed in the top ten rankings and Rebekah Walker claimed first place.

Four Delaware Area Career Center students recently competed and kicked some booty in the statewide Family, Career and Community Leaders of America competition.

To compete, each student picked a curriculum theme and created activities to teach social studies, science, math, or English and language arts. One activity was required to be adaptable for a student with special needs, a student of a specific age, or a student that is hearing impaired. After working with preschool students through the Early Childhood Education program at DACC, Rebekah chose to develop a program around using penguins to keep the children’s attention. According to the Early Childhood Education Instructor, Carol Fuller, “They don’t give out perfect scores because there is always room for improvement, but the judges really had to look hard to find a way to remove a point from Rebekah. In the end, she was marked down for saying ‘um’. The project she created and her presentation couldn’t have been better.”

Yerry Kitchen, Twylia Cook, Tiffani Penhorwood, and Ashley Randolph all placed in the top ten. Yerry chose a picnic theme. She said that the idea came to her from reading books to the preschool students in the Early Childhood Education program. Twylia chose to focus on English/language arts and utilized the book, “How to Teach a Slug to Read.” She spent a great deal of time looking for a unique book that students were not likely to already know, but would also provide the chance to create a lot of fun activities. Ashley focused on social studies and used an “under the sea” theme. Ashley shared that, “Social studies is difficult to explain to children, so I created scenarios using sea creatures, such as dolphins, to engage them in dialogue and help the dolphin make the right choices. Then I can assess them on how quickly they learn what is a right and wrong choice.”

Mrs. Fuller was impressed with how well everyone did in this competition, stating that there were only three points between eighth place and first. She went on to say, “I expected them to do well because they go through a very rigorous process in this program before they make it to the state competition. These girls love what they do and that’s a requirement for really succeeding when you work with small children and build curriculum for them. I’m impressed that these girls were willing to take on a challenge. Ashley’s choice of social studies was brave since it is difficult to convey the concept to kids. Twylia is severely hearing impaired, coming to us from the Ohio School for the Deaf, so her choice of English/language arts just shows how hard she is willing to work. None of these girls took the easy route and for that, I am very proud.”

Ohio Boating Education Course Comes to Alum Creek

Ohio Department of Natural Resource will offer its basic Ohio Boating Education Course at the Alum Creek Watercraft Office three times this summer including May 12, June 9, and July 14 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

ODNR will host three basic watercraft classes at its Alum Creek location this summer.

This is an eight-hour class in boating and water safety designed by ODNR Division of Watercraft. It covers the fundamentals of safe boating: state-required equipment, watercraft laws, navigation Rules of the Road, basic safety and risk management, and aids to navigation. Classes are enhanced with videos, slides, overheads, handouts, and other visual aids.

The course will be held at the Alum Creek Watercraft Office at 3305 South Old State Road in southern Delaware, Ohio.

Delaware County General Health District and the ACHIEVE Action Institute will present “Cultivating a Healthy Delaware County” on Thursday, May 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Council for Older Adults in southern Delaware, Ohio.

Delaware County General Health District will lead a discussion to address the health factors facing Delaware County on May 17 at the Council for Older Adults in Delaware, Ohio.

The event will provide an opportunity to hear about population-based strategies that help prevent or manage health risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and arthritis.

The event is free and a delicious, healthy lunch is being provided.

While Delaware County was recently named the healthiest county in the State of Ohio for the third year in a row, we have many citizens who either live with or develop a preventable chronic health condition, greatly impacting their quality of life. Nearly 50% of Americans are living with at least one chronic disease. People who suffer from chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and arthritis experience limitations in function, health, activity, and work, affecting the quality of their lives and the lives of their families.

The Burden of Chronic Disease in Delaware County:

Cancer, respiratory disease, and heart disease are the three leading causes of death in Delaware County in 2011.
In 2010, it was reported that 26% of adults in Delaware County are obese, and 35% of the adults are overweight. That equals 29,741 obese adults and 40,037 overweight adults facing increased risk for chronic disease.
According to a 2010 Ohio Department of Health study, an estimated 25% of our 3rd grade children are overweight/obese.
Obesity has been linked to increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, arthritis-related disability and some cancers.
The number of Delaware County adults who have been diagnosed with diabetes in 2008 was 11,551.
In 2008, an estimated 30,885 Delaware County adults reported being told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia.

Confronting the epidemic of chronic diseases requires us to bring community resources together and introduce them to the places, organizations, and systems that touch people’s lives every day, including schools, work sites, health care settings and the community.

For example, every location within the county needs easy access to healthy and affordable fruits, vegetables and other healthy food options, places where people can be physically active and that are safely and easily accessible, access to affordable preventive health care, and transportation strategies that support walking and biking. Key decisions related to these and other environmental changes rest in the hands of local leaders.

As signs of spring show up throughout Central Ohio there is always evidence of a few trees that didn’t make it through the winter and invariably some of them will be in the right-of-way.

Unfortunately, due to the economic situation and the pressure brought on local trees by Emerald Ash Borrer, Delaware, Ohio has a waiting list to have those trees replaced.

: Delaware Ohio offers an opportunity for community members to assist in having their street trees replaced.

However, the City of Delaware features a Cost-Share Replacement Program for street trees – those trees planted in a curb lawn between the sidewalk and the curb. The resident’s share is $125 to participate. This fee assists with the purchase of the tree.

The city covers the portion of the costs for the planting and ongoing maintenance of the tree. Trees that are purchased and planted are no less than 1.75″ in diameter and are purchased from nursery facilities to insure quality trees.

Historic Downtown Powell Inc. hosts its first 2012 Downtown Powell Street Markets on Sunday, May 6, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Anna Laurie Mackay and Keely Song Glenn have a collection of unique works that include works on fiber and several multi-media art works. During our visit during the First Friday celebration Glenn even provided an interpretive dance based upon her research through Eastern Ohio.

The City Arts Center is open Friday 4-7 p.m. and Saturday 2-7 p.m. with special performances and hours during the Delaware Arts Festival.

City Art Center is located in the Strand Arts Complex at 22 East Winter Street in historic downtown Delaware, Ohio.

The National Rifle Association’s Women On Target® program is sponsoring an instructional shooting clinic for Women Only at Black Wing Shooting Center on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio.

Central Ohio Symphony Closes Out Season on Saturday in Delaware

The Central Ohio Symphony will close out its 33rd season on Saturday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. when it presents the final concert of its subscription series at Gray Chapel on the Ohio Wesleyan campus.

Music Director Jaime Morales-Matos will conduct Debussy’s Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun and Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, The Pastorale. Concertmaster Tom Fetherston will be the featured soloist in Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, the only concerto by the early 20th century composer.

“Tom playing the Berg has been a long-term ambition for him and the Symphony,” said Executive Director Warren W. Hyer, in discussing the concert program. “This concerto is unusual in that most violin concerto repertoire played is usually from the 18th and 19th centuries.”

The concerto is dedicated to “the memory of an angel,” written in response to the death of Manon Gropius, the 18 year old daughter of close friends Walter Gropius and Alma Mahler.

The other two works contrast with the Berg. The Pastorale is an earth-themed symphony complete with a musical thunderstorm, whereas the Debussy is a famous impressionistic interpretation of a poem.

Hyer expressed pleasure with the Symphony’s 33rd year.

“We’ve had a very exciting season,” he said. “The Symphony has given audiences new ways to explore music this season and has also reached out to the community through non-concert events.”

“We are grateful to the community for its continuing support. We will be announcing Season 34 in the coming weeks,” Hyer added.
