Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America has made headlines with its “Save the Dream Tour” and it will be in Columbus, Ohio through Tuesday, May 17, at the Ohio Expo Center’s Lausche Building.

Per its Web site: “NACA’s historic Save the Dream Tour has been an incredible success with hundreds of thousands of participants. Thousands of homeowners received same day solutions saving hundreds some over $1,000 a month. All of NACA’s services are FREE.”

In the words of one of the NACA representatives on Channel 10 News Friday night, “it sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t.”

Well, for some it isn’t.

The NACA event is focussed on bringing the home owner and the mortgage company together in an attempt to create a win-win situation for all involved. The home owner has her interest rate reduced — and overall payment — to a point that allows them to stay in the home; while the the mortgage holder has a paying home owner in the home — rather than a foreclosure.

I totally applaud the efforts of NACA and this tour to help home owners keep their current homes and get back on their feet. It has worked out agreements with mortgage holders and investors that represent 90% of the United States’ housing market — which gives them the reach to potentially help a lot of people.

The key word in all this is potentially.

Ohio Short Sale

On its own Web site, NACA claims that “hundreds of thousands of participants have participated at NACA’s Save-the-Dream events nationwide” and that “thousands of homeowners received same day solutions.” Which puts their success rate at — assuming best case scenario — less than 10%.

Take the Chance: If You Qualify

Don’t let the percentages scare you. If you qualify for the program and want to keep your home, then by all means you must attend these programs. If for no other reason that the same-day assistance offered will beat the six-month (at best) battle you’ll face when taking on the challenge on your own.

If you register to attend, you’ll need to bring with you:

  • Pay Stubs (most recent available 30 days)
  • Monthly Mortgage Statement (most recent available)
  • Property Tax Bill (most recent available)
  • Homeowners Insurance Bill (most recent available)

But also, keep in mind that it all comes down to how the investor views your file and they have the final “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” when it comes to determining the amount of assistance they’ll provide you.

The Ohio Expo Center — the “formal” name of the State Fairgrounds — is located at 717 East 17th Avenue in Columbus, Ohio.
