It’s not happening until Friday, May 6, but Main Street Delaware’s upcoming First Friday event will celebrate the spirit of “Cinco de Mayo,” with a family-friendly downtown party that includes music, dancing, magic, and more.
The free celebration will feature a dance party with a disc jockey, courtesy of Our Town Studios, on the sidewalk in front of its 57 N. Sandusky St. location. Inside its workshop, Our Town Studios will host a free Mexican mosaic craft for children, allowing the youngsters to make and take construction-paper mosaics.
Fiesta Mexico restaurant, 12 W. William St., will contribute to the fun by sponsoring a magician and a clown to entertain the First Friday crowds.
And William Street United Methodist Church, 28 W. William St., will provide piñata games for children and give away free hot dogs to guests on the corner of Winter and Sandusky streets.
Many stores and restaurants will be open late for the monthly First Friday event, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 6.
During the event, Main Street Delaware will begin selling tickets for its annual Design Awards, which honor businesses and individuals that have made substantial improvements to the downtown area. The award ceremony and celebration will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 11 at City Art Center, 22 E. Winter St., and feature food provided by 1808 American Bistro, 29 E. Winter St.
Tickets for the Design Awards are $25 per person and may be purchased at Beehive Books, 25 N. Sandusky St. “This year’s award ceremony will be a big party to celebrate downtown Delaware,” said Fran Hamilton, executive director. “We have separated our annual meeting from this event, so that we have more time to relax, chat with friends, and enjoy the evening. We hope everyone will come and learn more about the wonderful transformations that continue to make Delaware better and better.”
