#9: The Fourth of July in Delaware, Ohio

The Fourth of July is one of the most special days in the history of the greatest Nation in the world.

While Americans are the only ones that celebrate our independence it also serves as the “jumping off point” for hundreds of countries that utilized our model of revolt to toss off the chains of European imperialism and set up their own self rule.

On this wonderful day, I’ll put Delaware, Ohio’s event calendar up against anyone in the country. Sure it won’t have 500,000 people like Columbus did the other night, but ours is more a celebration of community with the parade, Central Ohio Symphony concert, the community-sponsored fireworks display, and the Delaware Cows playing some all-American baseball.

  • Central Ohio Symphony will perform its 25th annual concert in Phillips Glenn at 8 p.m. today. Tickets are $3 for seats or free to enjoy the natural seating the Glen provides. Keep in mind while this concert is very reasonable to the 5,000 attendees — it isn’t a free performance for the symphony. It costs Central Ohio Symphony about $14,000 to put this concert on. And unfortunately a sponsor has elected to not pay their promised amount. Which means the symphony needs your support to keep this concert afloat. Please consider a donation — and talking to your employer about donating — to one of the “hidden treasures” to many Delawarians don’t enjoy.
  • Fireworks will go off as usual tonight thanks to the community rallying to raise $20,000 to cover the display. They will be launched from the city-owned area along Cherry Street so the best viewpoints will be locations along the Olentangy River especially the Ohio Wesleyan area.
  • The Cows moved their game from today to Monday, July 5, at 5 p.m. at Littick Field. It is great to have them back in town and we need to support them. So head on over to Littick and take in some great wood-bat league collegiate baseball. It’ll give you chance to say “we saw him when” to your friends and family.

Enjoy the day and remember that Freedom is Never Free and we owe it to our forefathers and those fighting for our rights today to say “thank you”.
