A marker reminds visitors the impact that Olentangy River Road has had on Central Ohio. (toby boyce)
Highbanks Metro Park is located in southern Delaware County and is a welcome respite from the hustle-and-bustle of Columbus Pike (US 23 N) and Powell Road (State Route 750) in rural Powell, Ohio.
Highbanks Metro Park contains 1,159 acres that borders the beautiful Olentangy River and is named for the 100-foot high shale bluffs.
Ohio and Olentangy shales, often containing outstanding examples of large concretions, are exposed on the bluff face and sides of the ravines. This area has been designated a National Natural Landmark.
Highbanks is also rich in Native American history. The park contains two Adena Indian burial mounds and a prehistoric earthwork.
The park offers a lot of programs that are very popular to area residents — out of 14 reservation required events through end of August only two still have openings — and is a great place to enjoy just a day outdoors with the family.
