Jeds Takes Me Back to Toledo

JEDS Chicken Chunks might not look the most appetizing, but the flavor test is off the charts. (Toby Boyce/all rights reserved)

I never like to see a business go out, but when I heard a rumor that Jed’s Barbeque & Brew would be making its way from northwest Ohio into Crosswoods it was a good thing to hear.

I got hooked on Jed’s food when it still had a location in Tiffin and then we’d make the hour drive to Perrysburg to enjoy Fireballs – their name for chicken chunks. So it was with a lot of excitement that we recently took the drive down 23 to give the “new kid in Crosswoods” a shot.

The location is great for a sports bar type atmosphere, but it is just that a sports bar atmosphere. Nothing about the decor makes you go “wow.” But it has lots of televisions – always on sports – to go with cold beer and bar food. What do you expect?

The Fireballs have undergone quite a change since we last had them. The traditional concept of sauce being added to fried chunks of chicken and served is still on the menu, but is dwarfed by the new kids in town. A cornocopia of flavors mixed together to make Fireballs an experience rather than just a meal. What do I mean?

  • Greek Balls ($9.99) are a combination of chicken with gyro meat, tomato, lettuce, onion, and tzatziki sauce.
  • Hex Balls ($9.99) are a combination of chicken with chili, nacho cheese, jalapenos and tomatoes.

They have all the other necessities to put a great bar food menu on tap.

Jed’s is located at 110 Hutchison Drive – in the Crosswoods area – just north of I-270 in Columbus.
