"Chasing Light..." a work commissioned by Joseph Schwanter (above) is the basis of poetry created by Delaware City School Students.
Delaware City School students guided by Willis teacher Pamela Beery will perform their creative works inspired by Joseph Schwantner’s Chasing Light… on Thursday, April 22, at 5 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio’s Beehive Books.
Beery, who is also the principal flutist in the Symphony, prompted her students to write poetry while listening to recordings of Chasing Light… — a commissioned work by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Joseph Schwantner. The students also looked at artwork by area artist Linda Wesner for their inspiration and made musical instruments, some of which will be played during the poetry jam.
The Symphony will be performing Chasing Light… at its May 1 concert as part of the Ford Made in America program and has a number of community events scheduled during a four-day residency with the composer beginning April 28. The Willis poetry jam is the kickoff event.
“This residency is all about the creative process,” said Warren W. Hyer, Executive Director of the Central Ohio Symphony, who watched some of the students at work earlier this month. “These students used art, writing, and music all together for their inspiration.”
Beehive Books is located at 25 North Sandusky Street in the heart of Main Street Delaware.
