Delaware, Ohio, will celebrate the 40th celebration of the first Earth Day in style on April 17 and 18 throughout the downtown area.
On Saturday, April 17, Earth Day Delaware (on Facebook) will have a collection of events to honor the concepts of Earth Day.
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. there will be a “Green” Vendor’s expo and display section along the sidewalks of North Sandusky Street in downtown Delaware, Ohio. In addition there will be workshops on Rain Barrels, Recycling and Water Treatment, “Greasel” Mobile, and DATA Bus and Demonstration of New Bike Racks.
Bring the family down as there will be Animals and Children’s Activities (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.), Book Readings at Fundamentals Parent Teacher Store (10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.), Water Safety with Corey the Safety Boat (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.), and Composting (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.).
The historic Strand Theatre is also getting into the act with a collection of Earth Day oriented movies. Including:
- “Finding Balance” – Villagers in Madagascar talk about the link between population growth and the destruction of a unique rain forest.
- “Acid Test” – The oceans are vast but climate change is changing the water. This film explains the connection.
- “A Forest Returns” – Ora Anderson, 94, witnessed how exhausted farmland become the magnificent Wayne National Forest in Southern Ohio. You can hear his story.
- “World Population” – An eye-catching mapping of global population growth and spread from the earliest humans to today.
- “The Story of Stuff” – Everything you never knew about the impact of your “stuff”, from its beginning as a natural resource to its end in a dump (unless you recycle).
- “What If” – Evangelical leaders speak of their concern for climate change, and call for “creation care” to protect the earth.
- “Dirt! The Movie” – The story of the “skin” of the earth – upon which all forms of life depend – from its miraculous beginning to its degradation and new appreciation.
- Children’s Film is to be determined.
On Sunday, April 18, their will be an Oltentangy River clean-up from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. and a screening of “Food, Inc” at the Strand Theatre at 1 p.m.
