It’s been a long cold winter and the Bed & Breakfast tour returns to Delaware, to the aptly named Winter Street Inn.
But don’t worry, there is no snow inside the Inn. Only the beautiful period furnishings collected by proprietors Roger Collom and Debbie Jones Aburmaieleh as they prepared to open the facility in downtown Delaware.
Of course it was only fitting to use classical pieces, as they are sharing a classical house with the public. “How many chances do you have to buy a 133-year-old Victorian mansion?” said Aburmaieleh. Well obviously for Collom and Aburmaieleh it was at least once.
And they are making the most of it. The home has four — Powers, Humphries, Betsy Ann, and Vance Carriage House — rooms that share the history of the house with current guests.
The home was built by George Powers, the founder of Delaware County Bank, and they lived in the home for 59 years. It was sold in 1935 to the Humphries and Betsy lived in the home for 63 years – a side note Bess (Betsy’s mother and also a resident) was the first woman to own a Ford dealership in the United States. It remained in the families name until it was bought by Collom and Aburmaieleh in October 2006.
Amazingly, the walls throughout the house are 3-4 bricks thick and every wall is a load-bearing wall and it cost a total of $2,500 to build. But the cost is only a number as the home has become so much more to the entire community. “We meet so many people that have a connection to the home,” commented Collom.
And that connection is an honor that the inn keepers are honored to share with members of the community. And they invite the public in with the murder mystery celebrations, and the space is perfect for showers, birthday parties, and graduation parties.
But the primary focus is on the bed and breakfast. The Inns three interior rooms are tastefully decorated with historic flare. The upstairs office area provides guests the chance to stay in touch with business while relaxing in heaven. The first-floor has a beautiful sitting room and the “bookless” library and the dining room. But the gem of the location is the Vance Carriage House. The room is located on the second-floor of the carriage house located at the rear of the property off the ally.
Rates in the Winter Street Inn range from $135 – $165 and the Inn offers discounts to Ohio Wesleyan University parents. The Inn is located at 185 West Winter Street — at the intersection with Elizabeth Street — in downtown Delaware, Ohio.
Don’t take my word for it though, contact Collom and Aburmaieleh to set-up your chance to stay at the home at (740) 990-8695 or you can reserve online.
