It has been a long hard winter in Central Ohio. The snow keeps falling and just when we think it is over … another blast comes around the bend. Are you sick of being stuck at home? Want to get away? Of course you do. But with these weather systems it is hard to plan, and who has the money to go great distances right now? Have I got a plan for you! Why not take a night away – getting to one of Delaware’s fine bed and breakfast inns – without having to worry about travel and just leave the kids and the dogs at Grandma’s house for the night.

The first stop on our tour is The Italianate Circa 1890 Bed & Breakfast in downtown Delaware, Ohio. A quiet unassuming structure on Central Avenue it is hard to believe that hundreds of drivers  pass oblivious to the wonderful business they just passed. But, those that do know it is there, tend to be raving fans – as can be witnessed by the brag books located in the two suites.

“The joys of being a bed and breakfast is that it is always fun to meet new people,” says inn keeper Llynne Hlavin.  “But, as you can see with the four books of comments … two in each suite … there are a lot of interesting people who have stayed here.”

The Italianate Circa 1890 Bed & Breakfast has as varied history as those that have stayed in since Hlavin opened in 2005, and it usually connects back to Ohio Wesleyan University. The home was owned by Charlotte Gallant’s grandparents – she event played here as a child – and it was also served as a rooming house for Ohio Wesleyan students, including Gallant’s uncle. Annabelle Ruffner, who worked at Ohio Wesleyan, bought it from the Gallants in 1945 and they lived here until 1975.

While Hlavin added 1890 to the name of the Inn, she believes that it could date back to the 1860s. “The house is probably older than 1890,” she commented. “I think it might date back to 1860 something. There was a house taxed then with additions later. The house has a definite outline and one side of the house appears in some older maps of Delaware. The basement has five rooms with one sealed off.”

What won’t be sealed off during your stay at the Italianate Circa 1890 Bed & Breakfast is your connection to the community. The home is located less than two blocks from downtown Delaware, Ohio and access to numerous shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Located only four blocks from the Ross Art Museum and the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University is another great draw for the Inn.

Visitors are provided the unique opportunity to enjoy a complete suite at the Inn. Both suites – the larger being the Sunflower Garden and the smaller being the Apple Cottage — offer a bedroom, sitting area with television, complete kitchen, and private bathroom. The entire Inn is wired for wireless Internet. Of course, we can’t forget breakfast when guests get to customize their menu from a collection of fresh fruits, breads, and other assorted items. Another unique feature, is that Hlavin bring the meal to her guests, you just give her the time and it’ll be ready.

The Italianate Circa 1890 Bed & Breakfast is located at 62 West Central Avenue in Delaware between Washington and Franklin Streets. Rooms range in price from $85 – $95 per night. Contact Hlavin today at (740) 363-9903 or via e-mail, to book your room and be sure to tell her that Toby & Sadie sent you.
