Artworks by students from The Five Colleges of Ohio will be on display from February 18 through April 1 at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum in downtown Delaware, Ohio.
The exhibit will open with a public reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. February 18, when five juror’s awards, valued at $200 each, and six merit award certificates will be presented. The reception, featuring live music and refreshments, is free and open to the public.
The juried exhibit features paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and more from students attending Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and The College of Wooster.
Overall, students submitted 134 pieces to be juried, with 64 selected for exhibition by David Knight, director of exhibitions and collections and part-time faculty member at Northern Kentucky University. Knight, a 1988 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, has been an active leader in the greater Cincinnati arts community for more than 20 years. He has curated and directed art exhibitions, and published articles nationally and internationally. In 2005, Knight was recognized as an Ohio Wesleyan “Distinguished Art Alumnus.”
Justin Kronewetter, director of the Ross Art Museum, said the Five Colleges art exhibit, held every two years, is intended to recognize up-and-coming student-artists and to teach them about working with a museum and mounting a professional art show. This marks the first time the exhibit has been held at Ohio Wesleyan. Previous shows have been held at The College of Wooster, which initiated the biennial exhibit.
“The results are joyful for some and disappointing for others,” Kronewetter said, “but that’s OK. It’s part of being in the art world. It’s important for young people to submit their works to an impartial juror for critique. The show also provides a wonderful opportunity for them to learn the protocols of exhibiting works in a museum.”
The Ross Art Museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and Saturdays. It also will be closed from March 5 through March 15 for mid-semester break. Admission is always free. For more information call (740) 368-3608.
The Museum is located in the old Delaware Post Office just south of downtown Delaware at the corner of South Sandusky and Spring Streets.
