Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishop women’s and men’s basketball teams will join the cause with Pink Zone games on February 15, 17, and 20 in Delaware, Ohio.
“We are extremely excited about our Pink Zone games,” said Nan Carney-DeBord, OWU women’s basketball coach and elected member of WBCA Board of Directors. “In addition to having pink nets on the courts, the OWU women’s and men’s teams will wear pink T-shirts during their warm-up periods.
“If basketball can be a platform for raising awareness, then our efforts are worthwhile,” Carney-DeBord continued. “It is our hope that the community will join in, in our enthusiasm to raise awareness.”
Ohio Wesleyan’s Pink Zone games include:
- 7:30 p.m., February 15 – against The College of Wooster (rescheduled due to weather conditions from previous week)
- 7:30 p.m., February 17 – faces Kenyon College
- 1 p.m., February 20 – versus Allegheny College (also Senior Day and Alumni Reception Day)
- 3 p.m., February 20 – men’s basketball against Allegheny College
The latter three games will be viewable live online and archived afterward. All will be held in Ohio Wesleyan’s Branch Rickey Arena.
Although admission to all games is free, monetary donations will be accepted at the door for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which operates in partnership with the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Both entities honor basketball coaches from North Carolina State who died from cancer: Kay Yow and Jim Valvano.
The Ohio Wesleyan women’s basketball team also collected donations for the Kay Yow Fund during a “Hoops for Hope” tournament in December.
Author Stephanie Zonars will be present at the Feb. 20 women’s game for a book-signing of “Leader of the Pack: The Legacy of Legendary Coach Kay Yow.” A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Kay Yow/WCBA Cancer Fund.
In 2009, the national Pink Zone campaign raised more than $1.3 million, reached more than 912,000 fans, and unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations.
