Hailed internationally as “the pianist’s pianist” Cecile Licad will perform an all-Chopin recital at 8 p.m. on January 31 in Gray Chapel in University Hall at Ohio Wesleyan University.
The performance is part of OWU’s 2009-2010 Performing Arts Series. Licad’s repertoire will include the complete 24 Preludes and four Scherzos by Frederic Chopin.
A virtuoso classical pianist, Licad is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed regularly with many orchestras, including Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and Philadelphia Orchestra. Recent U.S. highlights include performances with Seattle Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, Virginia Symphony, and at the La Jolla Chamber Music and Eastern Music festivals.
Licad’s large repertoire as an orchestral soloist ranges from acclaimed interpretations of the classical works of Mozart and Beethoven, to the Romantic literature of Brahms and Tchaikovsky, to the 20th century compositions of Debussy and Ravel.
Licad started playing piano at age 3, and debuted as a soloist at age 7 with Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Rudolf Serkin, and she achieved international recognition when awarded the prestigious Leventritt Gold Medal for pianists and violinists in 1981.
She is known for the emotional power of her piano performances. According to The Washington Post, “Every sound she made was beautiful, every note and phrase the result of intellect warmed by emotion.”
Tickets are $20 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and non-Ohio Wesleyan students with a valid ID. Tickets are free for OWU students, faculty and staff with a valid ID.
