Delaware County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee and Ohio Wesleyan University will observe Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with a special weeklong program exploring the “Diverse World – Common Goal” theme.

The program will feature events to highlight, celebrate, and emulate the King legacy, said Rosalind D. Scott, chair of the celebration committee.

The 2010 celebration will begin with the 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day worship service at 3 p.m., on Sunday, January 17, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church located in downtown Delaware, Ohio at 28 E. William St. The speaker will be the Rev. Sheri Smith Clayborn, minister to women at St. Paul AME church in Columbus.

The worship service will feature original artwork from area school students that illustrates the “Diverse World – Common Goal” theme. It also will include a youth theatre presentation of “The Story of Ruby Bridges,” directed by Candace Mazur-Darman of Dramatic Impact in Columbus.

This true story profiles the experiences of Bridges, a 6-year-old girl from New Orleans, who was one of the first black students to attend an all-white school in 1960 during the beginning of desegregation. She was escorted to and from school by U.S. marshals and received her lessons alone in a classroom.

The 2010 MLK celebration will continue Monday, January 18, with the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast celebration at 8:15 a.m. in the Benes Rooms of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Patrick D. Clayborn, assistant professor of homiletics at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.

Individual breakfast tickets are $20, with eight-person table sponsorships available for $160. For reservations, contact Scott at (740) 368-3386 or at rdscott@owu.edu. Reservations are requested, but tickets also will be available at the door.
