On Thursday it was announced that Consolidated Electric Power was chosen to receive stimulus money to bring broadband internet to rural Delaware and Morrow Counties and open up the area for further economic development.
The program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service awarded $2.4 million of the estimated $3.7 million that Consolidated Electric’s plan would require, according to Consolidated Electric’s Web site.
“This should have a major impact on attracting new economic development projects to Delaware,” wrote Delaware County Economic Development Director Gus Comstock in an e-mail.
Consolidated Electric Cooperative, since 1936, has been a pioneer in bringing electric services to the rural areas of Delaware and Morrow counties. Its goal with the funding is to continue in the pioneering tradition of building critical infrastructure for members. These new services will allow rural residential and business members to thrive in a world that requires high quality broadband services for education, health care, business and public facilities.
