The Bishops Are Back in Town

Ohio Wesleyan is always brimming with activity each fall and this year is no exception. The September calendar of events is quite full!

  • untitled1Aug. 16-Sept. 17 – “Decked Out,” an exhibit of painted skateboard decks by Columbus artist Cyrus Fire, in Gallery 2001 in the lobby of Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. The gallery is open during library hours from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday.
  • Aug. 20-Sept. 20 – “Marking Time,” an exhibit of paintings and drawings by Douglas Goering, along with prints, drawings, and photographs from the Richard M. Ross Art Museum’s permanent collection, at the museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Goering’s work includes richly colored abstract paintings that address aspects of visual perception. Ross Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; 10 a.m.to 9 p.m. Thursday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed Monday and Saturday.
  • 4 p.m. Sept. 1 – OWU Women’s Soccer against St. John Fisher College, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware.
  • Sept. 4 and 5 – OWU Women’s Volleyball Bishop Invitational, at Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. On Sept. 4, Ohio Wesleyan faces Wilmington College at 4 p.m. and Transylvania University at 8 p.m. On Sept. 5, Ohio Wesleyan faces Otterbein College at 10 a.m. and Grove City College at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, and $2 for students and senior citizens.
  • Sept. 4 and 5 – OWU Men’s Soccer hosts the Fred Myers Invitational Tournament, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware. On Sept. 4, Calvin College faces Rutgers University (Camden) at 5 p.m., and Ohio Wesleyan faces Carnegie-Mellon University at 7:30 p.m. The OWU game will be viewable live on the Internet, and archived afterward, at http://stream.owu.edu/. On Sept. 5, the consolation game will be held at 5 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, and $2 for students and senior citizens.
  • 9 p.m. Sept. 4, 11, 18, and 25 – Evening programs, at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours, and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope.   • 1 p.m. Sept. 5 – OWU Women’s Soccer against Medialle College, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware.
  • 1 p.m. Sept. 6 – OWU Women’s Soccer against Endicott College, at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware.
  • 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 – “What Renewing America Means to You.” Barbara Ehrenreich, author of “Nickled and Dimed, On (Not) Getting By in America.” The program, co-sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s Sagan National Colloquium and the Department of English, also represents the 2009-2010 Katherine Kearney Carpenter Lecture. The presentation will be held in Gray Chapel in University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St.
  • Sept. 11 and 12 – OWU Men’s Soccer hosts the Adidas Invitational Tournament. On Sept. 11, Alma College faces Oberlin College at 5 p.m., and Ohio Wesleyan faces Rose-Hulman Technical Institute at 7:30 p.m. On Sept. 12, Oberlin faces Rose-Hulman at 5 p.m., and Ohio Wesleyan faces Alma at 7:30 p.m. All games are at Roy Rike Field, 249 Park Ave., Delaware. Admission is $5 for adults, and $2 for students and senior citizens.
  • 10 a.m. Sept. 12 – OWU Men’s and Women’s Cross Country hosts the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championship, at Liberty Park, 2507 Home Road, Powell.
  • Noon Sept. 12 – OWU Field Hockey against Lindenwood University, at Selby Field, 45 S. Henry St., Delaware.
  • Sept 12 and 13 – OWU Golf hosts the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Fall Invitational Tournament, at Delaware Golf Club, 3329 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), south of Delaware. (Start time to be announced).
  • Sept. 14 – An exhibit of paintings by Delaware resident Barbara Timmons, OWU Class of 1954, in the OWU Alumni Gallery in the Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Gallery hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Sept. 15 – OWU Golf hosts the OWU Fall Invitational Tournament, at Oakhaven Golf Club, 2871 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), north of Delaware. (Start time to be announced).
  • 8 p.m. Sept. 15 – OWU Music Department faculty/guest recital featuring Mariko Kaneda, assistant professor of music, on piano, in Jemison Auditorium in Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St., Delaware.

  • 7 p.m. Sept. 17 – “Combating Climate Change: From the Grease Trap to the Gas Cap” by John Gordon, OWU Class of 1976, and his son, Spencer Gordon, who will discuss their business of converting used kitchen oil to biodiesel, in the Benes Rooms of the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.
  • 8 p.m. Sept. 17 – Perkins Observatory New Vistas in Astronomy lecture, “Looking Inside Stars: Helioseismology and Asteroseismology,” by Marc Pinsonneault of The Ohio State University, at the observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware.
