Putting the 3/50 Project to Work in Delaware

1017669_excited_teen_shopperThe lovely wife, our great neighbor, and I spent another wonderful First Friday in downtown Delaware last night. The crowds were large and it just was a great event.

We visited all our favorite stops, chatted with the wonderful police and firemenworking with the kids, and finally wrapped up the evening with a late dinner and drinks at Nova Restaurant. It was a great time for us, spending our money locally. And that is the concept behind the 3/50 project.

  • 3. Think about which of the three independent businesses you’d missed most if they were ogne. Stop in and say hellpo. Pick up a little something that will make someone smile. Your contribution is what keeps these businesses around.
  • 50. If half the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in independently owned businesses, then purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revune.
  • 68. For every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend it at a national chain only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home.

Delaware has a great tradition of locally-owned businesses — from our wine shops, to art studios, to restaurants and everything in between — and we need to celebrate those businesses whenever we can. Not just on First Friday and not just downtown … but all month long all over the county.
