As the economy continues to struggle, we see the best coming out in a lot of people and organizations. The Delaware County District Library is just one of those organization in Delaware County.

A sign is that the Library launched its “Job Site” location in the main branch in downtown Delaware. “This is a new service provided for Delaware County residents specifically for active job searches,” said Shea Alltmont, director of communications for the Library.

“We’ll help you build resumes, set-up e-mail, and all the tools that are needed.” Among those tools is free faxing and copying for job search materials to those using the service. “We don’t want something like the cost of a copy to be a hindrance in the job search process.”

It is all part of the evolving world of the world’s libraries. As the public moves into more e-books and Kindles and away from the “hardback classics” the bricks and mortar of your mom and dad’s library remains but with a little different twist.

But, don’t think that checking out the classics has become passe in Delaware County. The District Library system — comprised of the main branch in Delaware and the Ostrander and Powell facilities — are on pace to not only set a record for items checked out in 2009 but also to eclipse the 1,000,000 mark for the year. “We want to be the place that helps you stretch your dollars,” says Alltamont. “We want you to be economically savvy and offer a lot of good freebies.”

In addition to the latest magazines and best-sellers, the Library is excited to offer Playaway. The Playaways are similar to MP3 players loaded with a book that can be played just about anywhere. “Playaways are really cool technology,” says Alltamont. “We are on of the few libraries in Ohio to offer them right now.”

The Library is growing all across the board. A new location is in the preparation stages for Orange Township and a renovation of the Powell building. In addition, the current facilities will add more search functions to the Web site and a brand new collection-sharing agreement will open up nearly 1,000,000 more titles to Delaware County residents.

If you haven’t already met with the Delaware County Library, now is the time to get to know them. The Library will be holding a “card drive” in September and anyone with an ID can get their own card. Visit any librarian today to get your card. “All you need for a Library Card is an ID card and proof of residency,” said Alltamont. “Those under the age of 16 do need to have parental consent.”

Well don’t let that stop you from entering the wonderful world of the Delaware County District Library.
