Sitting only about three miles east of County Line Road, Johnstown is just outside of Delaware County.
And as quietly as Johnstown sits at the intersection of State Routes 62 and 37, Route 62 Barbecue sits at the bottom of a hill just off the banks of a stream in a quiet non-assuming building.
But walk in the front door, and all that quiet goes out the door. This small shop, which mostly serves take-out, offers a limited number of “home style” seating. Home style in that they are an eclectic collection of dinner tables with matching chairs, the whole places screams ecletic.
I ordered the 62 Rib Platter ($12.00) with sides of spicy southern greens and skillet corn. Mom and Gretchen tried the 62 Sandwich Platter with pulled pork ($6.30) with mom getting cheesy potatoes and skillet corn ($1.50 for extra side) and Gretchen getting baked beans and a pickle spear ($1.00).
The Rib platter was amazing. I’ve had good ribs, but these were among the best. Perfectly cooked to fall off the bone when pulled on but not mushy. The sides were solid, though not my favorite. The greens were just as expected, but the skillet corn was new and would be an aquired taste. If you go those remember that 62bbq states “availability of ribs may be limited so please call ahead in order to guarantee freshness.”
Gretchen and mom were both very impressed with the amount of pork they received on their pork sandwich for only $6.30. It had a great smoked flavor and mixed with the basic barbecue sauce it had great taste.
A great meal for less than $25 for three people is hard to find. Maybe that’s because Route 62 Barbecue is a little hard to find. But, I’ll tell you its worth it.
