It was with a heavy heart that I report this bit of news. I always enjoyed heading down to Ohio Wesleyan’s Littick Field and taking in the Delaware Cows of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate Baseball League action (similar to the Cape Cod League).
I have served on the board for the Cows and unfortunately my work schedule has limited my true ability to help the team. Now, I’m left wondering, what if? I should have made more time for the organization and maybe we’d have the team in town in 2009.
As for 2009, we want you to be among the first to know that our board has decided to take a one-year hiatus from GLSCL play in an effort to reorganize our business model in the face of an ever-changing and challenging economy,” wrote Cows’ General Manager Jay Sokol in an e-mail. “From day one, the entire Cows organization has worked to provide a first-class product both on and off the field. This is a massive undertaking that requires the efforts of a large number of people on an ongoing basis. Despite these efforts, this past season was a real eye-opener. Expenses have skyrocketed, while it has become increasingly harder to raise funds. As one example, our cost for buses has nearly doubled over the past twelve months to the point where our 2008 bus expenditures alone were in the $20,000 range.
It is sad to see our great organizations having to take a step-back as the economy scales everything down.
Good luck to Jay and all the rest as they retool for what I’m sure will be a successful 2010 season.

If you need volunteers to help resuscitate the Cows for the 2010 season, count me in! Contact me, please! I am so bummed that the Cows aren’t here – this is my first summer living in Delaware, and it is exactly this sort of “small-town” life that I wanted….Save the Cow.
