Tonight is the annual Convocation in University Hall’s Gray Chapel and it serves as the traditional beginning of the University’s academic year.
It will be Rock Jones first year in Delaware and we welcome him and the class of 2012 with open arms to our wonderful community.
One of my favorite traditions when I worked at Ohio Wesleyan was the ringing of the “Jones” Bell. The bell is always rung at convocation to begin the school year and at commencement to signify the closing of another academic year.
The bell has “presided” over the University essentially since its founding. It was loaned to the Academy, a pre-cursor to the University, by Nicholas Jones. It also rang the first class of students into the University in 1842Â before being donated to the University by Jones’ heirs in 1941.
Welcome back Ohio Wesleyan, we missed you!
