The Delaware Speech and Hearing Center will be testing personal stereos during the Powell Street Fair on Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), more than a third of hearing loss cases in the United States are noise induced. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration states that the risk of hearing damage begins at a sound level of 85 decibels. Most personal stereos exceed that limit even when playing at half volume.
Joan Hazlett, Delaware Speech and Hearing Center lead audiologist, hopes this event will “help families learn to use their iPods safely while raising awareness of the dangers of noise-induced hearing loss.”
The Powell Street Fair is located in downtown Powell and the Delaware Speech and Hearing Center booth will be on the south side of East Olentangy Street.
