MARYSVILLE, Ohio — The state fire marshal’s office said it couldn’t determine what caused a fire that gutted a popular Union County restaurant early yesterday. A passer-by called 911 about 6:45 a.m. to report that Woody’s Smokehouse BBQ at the junction of Rts. 33 and 42 was on fire. State investigators determined that the fire began in a utility area of the restaurant where electric and gas service entered the building, but could not determine an exact cause. The fire wasn’t suspicious, and the possibility remains that the wind and weather might have played a role, said Shane Cartmill, spokesman for the fire marshal’s office. Lt. David Wilson of the Jerome Township Fire Department said about 45 firefighters from seven departments fought the blaze for more than two hours. By midmorning, the building still was standing but the inside was ruined, he said. The property owner is Brunwood Investments, according to the Web site of the Union County auditor. The restaurant wasn’t open at the time of the fire and no one was injured, Wilson said.
