Happy People Get Woody’s & BBQ

Woody’s SmokehouseAnyone that knows me, knows that my sense of humor stopped in about the sixth grade. And they would also not be at all surprised that Woody’s Smokehouse’s slogan would be among my favorites.

“Happy people get Woody’s”

And I’ll say that on Saturday night, the most amazing thing happened, Gretchen got a woody. That is amazing in two ways — first, and I don’t know how to break this to you, she’s a woman; and the second is that she’s a Michigan fan.

That’s right in addition to being a great double entendre about sex, all the scarlet and gray leads me to believe that the smokehouse is really named after legendary OSU football coach Woody Hayes.

And the meal was as complex as the man himself.

When we arrived our dining partners had already ordered a nacho appetizer ($8.95). In the vain of most bbq joint’s nachos it included pulled pork and was a very large collection of nacho chips, cheese, beans, and anything else they could pile on.

100_0107.jpgGretchen had her heart set on an order of southern deep-fried pickles ($5.95) and they were better than advertised. The batter was light and crisp and the pickles were still crunchy underneath.

Moving on to dinner, Gretchen ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($7.95) with baked beans and was very impressed. I can tell, because I was only offered a very small bite of the pork and baked beans. But from my sample, the pork was extremely tender and had just the right amount of smoky flavoring. The baked beans had been on for a while as all the flavors had melded together to create that wonderful complex blend of flavors that only slow-cooking can offer.

I went for the half-rack of slow-smoked baby-back ribs ($12.95) with a baked potato, corn pudding, and corn bread. The baked potato was – amazingly – a real potato. Not one of those “freak show” 200-pound monsters that the chain places have become accustomed to serving. The corn pudding wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but not bad either.

However, the ribs were very close to the best I’ve ever had. Too often, ribs are overcooked in these smokehouses and it “falls of the bone” and is a little dry. These were perfect, they tasted more like bone-in pork chops than some of the ribs I’ve had in the past. The rub was complex blend of flavors, but none of them over-powered the succulent natural rib flavors, and two sauces were served at the table for those crispy ends.

On a whole, this was a great place to eat and we’ll certainly making another trip down 42 soon. Come on out and join us, now won’t you.
