A recent associated press article, highlights an interesting option for seniors to pay off their taxes — working for the city.
The article features the community of Greenburgh, New York – which has one of the highest tax rates in the nation – where Paul Feiner, town supervisor, wants to put seniors to work for $7 an hour.
The idea is a noble one, if done properly, but I struggle with the $7 per hour payment. The concept is that the city would benefit from having its retired leaders “back” in the work force. Retired teachers would be working in schools or accountants would be helping community members with their finances. Why would these people elect to work part-time for only $7 an hour?
Even if that money is considered “volunteer” and isn’t subject to taxes, it would equate to about $9 per hour for a “normal” employee — and these people can do that at McDonald’s or almost any other retail job.
The community does receive an amazing benefit of having these professionals working within their fields with those that need them. So why not pay them properly for their work?
