A Busy Night at Wild Lights & The Zoo

Wild Lights - Gretchen Boyce (c)The days until Christmas have drawn strangely short — and with my hectic work schedule we haven’t had a chance to get out and look at a lot of Christmas lights this year.

So on Saturday night, we headed south to the Columbus Zoo and its annual Wild Lights display. The trees and exhibits were decorated with more than 3,000,000 lights and featured a chance to visit with Santa Claus, purchase cookies from Mrs. Claus’s kitchen, a model train display, and even a chance to go ice skating.

Wild Lights is a popular destination, you can read accounts at Rococo Mocco, Andrew Bethel, Caleb & Titus, or The Palmers, and be prepared to wait to get onto Powell Road, into the parking lot, into the zoo, and to see any of the exihibits at the zoo.

Don’t get me wrong, it is worth the wait. Just setting the stage for you. Tickets are $10 per person, we were comped thanks to Ohio Health and Grady Memorial, and the sites are amazing.

Lots of lights to just slide along the paths and enjoy. But also lots of people to avoid and suicide stroller drivers to dodge.

We were able to find a quiet spot along the lake at the entrance and just enjoy the hundreds of lights while we sipped on hot cocoa and spiced wassail. It was a lovely moment and worth all the time sitting in traffic – both people and cars.

Quick Note: The lights will be closed on Christmas eve and Christmas night.
