Green is the Next Catch-Word in Delaware, Ohio

October 15th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Autumn - John Nyberg (c)Green. It’s not just for St. Patrick’s Day anymore.

What has become the newest buzz-word, everyone seems to be going green. And I like it.
And no green isn’t my favorite color (that’s purple if anyone was curious), but a wonderful way to live. Regardless of your political views of global warming, this is the only world we have to live in – and taking better care of it has to be a good thing.

How are we seeing these new trends in homes?

  • Smaller Footprints – The “McMansions” are falling out of favor and the newest trend is for smaller more environmentally friendly homes.Green
  • More Green Space – We’ve seen a lot of central Ohio townships demand more road frontage from future developments. While parts of this are to keep them from becoming high-density regions, it also helps to keep more green space in our environment. Delaware is traditionally an agricultural county - and turning it into downtown Columbus is not a good idea for many reasons - and several include the environment.
  • Friendly Appliances - I had a young couple that were looking to purchase a house, and they were torn. Should they ask for the home owners to replace the current hot water heater, which wasn’t uncalled for, or should they suck it up and wait until they could purchase a tankless water heater? The deal fell through, so they didn’t have to make the decision - but this is one that many Americans are considering. How can I help the environment by using less natural resources?
  • Alternative Fuels - While the majority of Delaware County is still using natural gas for its heat, there is a growing number of “pellet furnaces” that have emerged around the area. These pellet furnaces allow the home owner to heat not only the house, but also any outbuildings with a centralized furnace that can burn wood, coal, or corn. Using renewable resources helps to make them more eco-friendly than our gas-guzzling furnaces in the basement.
  • Political Attention to Environment - We are seeing more environmentally- centered bills being introduced in the state legislature. Do I agree with all of them? No, however talking about them is always a great thing. We need to find a balance between what is best for the environment and our economy.

Kudos to you for participating in blog action day.

I did not participate. However, I wrote a belated post of my own about an environmental issue that might strike a cord with some of your readers.

Brazilian Teak, Slave Labor, and the Destruction of the Rain Forest.

    You can find it at:

Anything that you can do to help promote awareness of this issue will be greatly appreciated. Normally, I don’t ask for this kind of help, but the issue might hit home with other real estate agents.

    Keep up your good work.

    Thank you!
