It has been a while since, I did a “real” Delaware’s Best and I realized that I’ve made a glaring omission in my list. The Andrews House has to be featured under Delaware’s Best because of all that it does for the citizens of our great county.
Andrews House is located in the heart of downtown Delaware at the corner of Franklin and Winter Street — and it is fitting as it is the heart of the Delaware community. Andrews House services the community through six key outreach programs.

- Computer Learning Center
- Interfaith Legal Services clinic
- Supervised Visitation Program
- Third Thursday free soup supper from 5-6 p.m.
- Latino Outreach Program
- Grace Medical Clinic
They also provide low-cost rental office space to community agencies including:
- Action for Children,
- Arthritis Foundation,
- Alzheimer’s Association,
- Big Brothers/Big Sisters,
- Concerned Citizens Against Homelessness,
- The Salvation Army,
- Unity in Community, and
- Connections, the Delaware Volunteer Center.
And the location houses two start-up businesses:
- Home Instead and
- Delaware Insurance Advisors.
One of the neat things about Andrews House – to a historical geek like me – is that it is historically accurate dating back to 1845, even down to the sidewalk. The organization’s Web site has a great “about us” page that features the building’s history as a residence, hospital, and even fraternity house.
The Andrews House is truly one of Delaware’s gems.

Ah, Toby…YOU’RE the best!
i second that jill!
Jill – What you and the Andrews House does is above and beyond everything else in this community. We need to clone you and your boards and make this a model for the state and nation.
Gretchen – You’re just biased. :p
