Historic Courthouse Summit Being Presented in Tiffin

The Delaware County Courthouse is a beautiful building just like the majority of Ohio’s county courthouses. However, the majority date back to an earlier time and have a need for preservation. The poster-county for this battle has become Seneca County, where Seneca County Commissioners have voted for demolition of their historic — and condemned — building rather than rehabbing it. The battle has been a tense one, but it appears that Seneca County Courthouse will be demolished. In response, Preservation Ohio, Heritage Ohio, and Tiffin Historic Trust are planning “County Courthouses and Community Revitaliztion” on November 2-3 at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. According to the Web site, the purpose of the summit is:

…to bring together a wide cross-section of individuals to collectively consider the unique and powerful role that county facilities – and particularly county courthouses — play in Ohio’s 88 county seat communities. In particular, the forum will look at the ways that county courthouses intersect with downtown and community revitalization, including the true impact of demolition, and will also identify as many renovation and reuse funding strategies as possible.

The fact that Tiffin is hosting is not an accident as the Seneca County Courthouse is one of three court houses in Northwest Ohio that face an uncertain future.
