Today is the 40th birthday of the Big Mac.
Not sure if that is something we should be celebrating as many would point to the Big Mac as the “foundation” of America’s love of fast food and eventually the obesity epidemic.
However, from a business perspective what the Big Mac did for fast food can almost only be compared to what Henry Ford did with his Model T. The “one-way” food style spawned an entire genre of food models which has now changed. But the inovation was downright amazing.
Today, the number of Big Macs consumed per American is 550 Million — or 17 each second — every year. And at 576 calories each, that’s a lot of energy.
