Spending an Evening with Nickel Creek

Nickel Creek at Lifestyle Pavilion

Clouds covered the sky, and the rain appeared iminent right up until 8 p.m. when the band took the stage. Suddenly the sky over Lifestyle Community Pavilion cleared as if everyone — and I mean everyone — wanted a chance to watch the show.

And the music Nickel Creek, along with special guest Fiona Apple, created was worthy of anyone willing to watch. Nickel Creek - consisting of Chris Thile, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins – invited about 2,500 of their new friends into a jam session on their front porch. And we were treated to the band’s unique collection of music their wonderful take on the classics from Patsy Cline to others.

In classic bluegrass style, the performance appeared to be ad-libbed — which is the sign of a great bluegrass musician — and completely improvised. On every song, I waited looking for my “favorite” solo and realized that the answer to it would have to be “all the above”. All of the members took their time to shine and made the most of it.

I was curious about how Apple was going to blend with the group, but her voice – full of sadness and pain – sounded as natural with a mandolin and fiddle as it ever has before. My only “dissapointment” was the Apple didn’t lend her voice to any of Nickel Creek’s songs.

It was a good show and if you have a chance to catch Nickel Creek in Mansfield on Oct. 31, it is worth the trip.
