Getting Away to Ohio’s Amish Country

Technology is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it is fun to turn off the PDA, the cell phone, the laptop and all these other “life simplfying items” and getting away from it all.

How about if you lived like that on a daily basis?

Well you can get a taste for that in Ohio’s Amish Country. Holmes, Wayne, Tuscarawas, and Knox Counties provide the largest concentration of Amish and Mennonite outside of Germany. Holmes County is the “hub” of Amish Country but increased land prices as more “English” want to enjoy their way of life has forced the families into cheaper farming regions of Knox and Wayne Counties.

However, for the “tourists” the option is still to head to Berlin and that is to be expected as it is the focal point of the tourist industry. And there are a lot of tourist options. You have Troyer’s Amish Farm located outside Walnut Creek (about 5 minutes east of Berlin), which is also home to Der Dutchman Restaurant, Carlisle Gifts, and the beautiful Carlisle Inn.

Head back into Berlin and enjoy the main streets collection of shops - many Amish themed and some not - however a must stop is Der Bake Oven. Der Bake Oven is one of the few bakeries that handmake EVERYTHING in their baked goods.

Looking for dinner? Head north to Mt. Hope - site of the infamous Mt. Hope Auction - for Mrs. Yoders (a review from the Plain Dealer) and a great little place to eat.

Amish Country Ohio is located about 60 miles northeast of Delaware and can be accessed by following U.S. 36 east to Ohio 62 in Millwood. Proceed northeast on 62 to Berlin.
