I’m obviously one of the last to discover Letterboxing and while I haven’t tried it out yet, it sounds very interesting.
I discovered it recently via a post on MyHometownOhio and spent a few hours searching out what Letterboxing is, and locations that were around central Ohio.
According to Letterboxing North America:
LETTERBOXING is an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming “treasure hunt” style outdoor quest. A wide variety of adventures can be found to suit all ages and experience levels.
For the uninitiated, Letterboxing is a cross between scrapbooking and a treasure hunt. Some of the locations read like a classic pirate map, while others are much easier to find. Once found, the searcher will stamp the “letterboxes” stamp into their travel log and share their own stamp with those that created the Letterbox.
How popular is letterboxing in Ohio?
A search of letterboxes in the state of Ohio returned 1,199 letter boxes hidden throughout the state. Delaware County is home to more than 25 of these boxes.
A Yahoo! group on letterboxing has almost 2,500 members and has added 70 new members in the past seven days.
Sounds like another fun way to enjoy getting outdoors this summer and learn more about Ohio.
