What am I talking about? It is looking a lot like summer in Delaware, Ohio this week and what does that mean? Well an abundance of yard work to start, but for me it means evenings with wonderful walks. And this week’s best will focus on just that, Delaware’s best places to take a walk.
Ohio Wesleyan professor John Krygier undertook a unique project in 2000 which helped the city to map out the area for these trails. From his Web site:
The City Of Delaware (Ohio) Recreation Department, community members, and students and faculty in the Ohio Wesleyan University Department of Geology and Geography have collaborated to develop a detailed proposal for a recreational path system for the City of Delaware. The project involves researching, mapping, and analyzing (using Geographic Information Systems and GPS) a system of bicycle paths that connect neighborhoods, schools, commercial areas, and recreational facilities throughout the city.
So with that in mind, we take a look at the current best of the walking trails.Â
The Newest: Springfield Branch Trail
Located along the old-railroad bed that ran along the south-edge of downtown is what is shaping up to be a great trail. The trail is mostly in place from Henry Street west, but the east section from Central Avenue to Henry Street is still being completed (photo is from Henry Street). The east section will include two of the old railroad bridges. The first where the trail crosses over William Street and the second where the trail crosses U.S. 23 and the Olentangy River.
Classic Charm: The River Trail
Walking along Mingo Park is a nice little trail that thing continues on south along the Olentangy River before it ends. Mingo Park is a very-popular place during the summer with a lot of options for families. Not the least of which is the exercise loop which includes exercise stations as you make your way around the trail.
Tree-Lined Beauty: Locust Curve
Okay, so it lacks the character and history of the first two walking paths, however if you wanted a “most improved” this would have to be on the list. Thanks to the efforts Locust Curve leaders and the city of Delaware, new trees have been planted along the trail. While the trees are years away from maturity, it is amazing how just the site of them transforms this walking path from a burning wasteland and into a walking trail.
The Northwest District
This is a great time of year to enjoy the history of Delaware’s Historic Northwest District. Running north of Central and west of Sandusky, this area offers a great collection of period homes from Delaware’s past. It is a wonderful trip to take the owners out for a long walk.
So put down that remote and get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather (minus the pollen count) in Delaware, Ohio this week. But maybe, just maybe, the best walking path would end at one of the best places for a Pup Cup.
