Delaware Ohio’s Best: Gyro

One of the things that Delaware does lack is a diverse selection of ethnic restaurants. Beyond Mexican and Chinese the options fall into traditional American fare.

However, that doesn’t mean other ethnic options are not available in Delaware. As with everything else, “American fare” is becoming an extremely variable term. From Avesta’s eclectic cuisine to Corner Diner’s typical diner fare it is all American – with a different taste.

So in our small town, there are several places to find your favorite Greek sandwich.

You Serve What?: Corner Diner

From the outside it looks like every other diner, there is little hint that the owner of this establishment are of Greek descent and proudly include Gyros on the menu. And they are some of the best Gyros you are going to find outside of a “real” Greek restaurant. Corner Diner is located on Bowtown Road just east of The Point on Delaware’s east side.

Funky Style: Avesta

Everything on the menu at Avesta is a “classic” in that they’ve added their eclectic touch to it. From its four-star Macaroni and Cheese to its Gyro sandwiches, the restaurant takes everything to another level. Avesta is located in the first block of South Sandusky Street across from the Courthouse.

For Those on the Go: Dan’s Deli

Dan’s Deli consists of two lunch carts, one is located on North Sandusky Street at the Courthouse and the other is on South Sandusky Street across Spring Street from the Richard M. Ross Art Gallery. Not what you would expect from a lunch cart as these Gyro sandwiches are solid. The bread is fresh, the meat warm and sliced thin and tender, and it just is a solid sandwich at a decent price. Of course, it won’t make you forget your trip to Athens, but it will set you back a lot less as well.

With a Little Class: Bun’s Restaurant

Bun’s Restaurant was a Delaware landmark before being lost to a fire and experiencing a re-birth. The Gyro sandwich is unique in that it is served with chunks of meat rather than being finely sliced. Does that make it better? Depends on your taste, as the sandwich is rather filling, but they can be a little tough at times. Bun’s is located on West William Street, just look for the neon sign.

Gotta Be Greek For Me: Tria

For those that just can’t have a Gyro anywhere that doesn’t also serve other Greek dishes – then a great option lies only 20 minutes in Powell. Tria is a classic Greek restaurant with an upscale flare. The gyros are served with “Greek Seasoned” French fries. A great lunch or dinner! Tria is located on Powell Road east of Sawmill Parkway and west of Liberty Road.
