Delaware Ohio’s Best: Pizza Shop

We are sitting in middle America, somewhere between Chicago and New York, where the pizza shops are a blend of deep-dish Chicago style and thin New York style.

So, who makes the best pie in Delaware?

Well that depends on your taste …

Best Local Pie

For virtually everything else, I prefer to buy local, however I’m an equal opportunity pizza purchaser.

  • DelCo Pizza – Located at 523 Pennsylvania Avenue, DelCo pizza is a consistently great pie. We enjoy their Veggie Pizza which is loaded with green and black olives, mushroom, onion, green peppers, and tomatoes for $9.60 (for a 10-inch pie) up to $13.70 (for a 14-inch pie). For more information give them a call at 363-0033.
  • Gabby’s Place – Located at 3120 Olentangy River Road, just off the junction of St. Rte. 315 and U.S. 23. We enjoy the Delaware Detroyer – 12 items and “everything but the kitchen sink (or fish)” – whih run from $11.50 for a small to $16.50 for a large. While we are talking about pizza, they also make a very-good Stromboli. Give them a call at 369-4619 for the next order of pizza.
  • Amato’s Woodfired Pizza – Located on in the first-block of South Sandusky Street downtown (8 S. Sandusky), this is a great change-up to the other local pies. Forget about the “peperoni and cheese” here as the options are more unique selections and everything is fresh-fired in a wood-fired oven. The pies are very good and are all personal pan. Not a lot of room to sit and eat, so it is usually a take out menu. (A review on Waymark.)

The Best “Regional” Pie

  • Marco’s Pizza – Marco’s opened in Delaware last summer at the old Friendly’s at 219 South Sandusky Street. This is a favorite of Toby and Gretchen from their days in Northwest Ohio. This is only the second Marco’s in central Ohio (they have another location in Dublin) and they enjoyed the pizza-buffet, until realizing it was impossible to still lose weight AND eat 40 pieces of pizza for lunch each day.
  • Lil Bella’s Pizza – I only know of two locations – one in Ontario and the other at 400 West Central Avenue (the old East of Chicago Pizza) in Delaware – so not sure it is a ”regional” restaurant, but it fits for my category. Having used to have been downtown across from The Strand Theatre, we ate their on the way to a movie and it was always a good meal. Lots of food and a reasonable cost.
  • Hungry Howie’s Pizza – Voted Michigan’s Best Pizza, Hungry Howie’s is making a foray into Central Ohio in the Westfield Shopping Center (corner of St. Rte. 37 and Houk Road). The pizza is okay – we like the subs better – but it is pretty cheap and quick. For example on Wednesdays they usually have a large pizza for $5.99 or on Monday and Tuesday get two medium for $9.99. Give them a call at 363-8020.

The Best National Pie

  • Donato’s Pizza - This is a good pizza with toppings just the way Toby likes them - big and covering the pizza. This is a great
  • Papa John’s Pizza - A classic New York style pizza — at least for the Midwest — Papa John’s offers a nice thin crust with a good sauce.
  • Pizza Hut - One of the first chain pizza joints, Pizza Hut went through a down-time a few years back where it got “cheap”, but it is back with some really good specialty pizzas.

So what pizza place did I miss?

Toby and Gretchen have been talking about trying two ”new” pizza shops in Delaware — Papa Joe’s (on St. Rte. 42 at Central Avenue) and Pizza Pan (in the Kroger Shopping Center on South Sandusky Street). Have you tried them? What was your experience?

The great thing about pizza is that everyone has an opinion and we’d love to hear your thoughts on the best pies in Delaware.

DelCo is good – hard to beat for delivery – especially if you want pasta.

But when it comes to the best Pizza in Delaware – it is really, really hard to beat Amato’s Woodfired Pizza – the pies are great – and the price is hard to beat. And to top it off their new subs are amazing too. Sure, it might take a while to get your pizza (pickup only) but it’s well worth it!

[...] Ds will be opening at 29 East Winter Street, accross from the Strand Theatre, in the same location as the short-lived Manhattans restaurant and Lil Bella’s pizza shop.  [...]

I love both Delco and Amatos. It depends on what I’m in the mood for.. Delco is the classic midwestern pie (tons of toppings, a great flavorful slightly sweet sauce, and cheese to the edge of square pieces). Amatos has more eclectic toppings and a more distinct flavor. Delco has great delivery too, and Amatos will deliver to the Backstretch if you’re getting a beer already!

Delco Pizza is certainly the best Pizza in town. The seasoning they sprinkle on the pizza gives it the added touch that quality pizza lovers will enjoy. I work on the drive-thru side of the shop so I am offered pie quite often and have yet to tire of the taste. As for Amatos, I agree with Manny when he says it has more of an eclectic feel, however, these two pizzas (Delco and Amatos) cannot be compared. Amatos is in a category of it’s own and the pizza is great. If I’m having Amatos I’m having basil pesto sauce. If you’re a single person, on your lunch break, or a couple without kids Amatos is a good choice. Delco pizza is great for any occasion (except lunch since they’re open at 3) and any person. In my opinion Delco pizza is the king of all hometown Pizza shops!

Delco pizza is awesome, but if i have to choose a place based on not only taste, but also by the friendliness of employees, then i would not choose delco.
