Why is Columbus Ohio So Gay and Lesbian Friendly?

According to a story by John Caldwell in the March 27 issue of The Advocate, (found via Queercents and Nina) Columbus, Ohio is a hot-place for gay and lesbian couples.

The article includes the following quote:

“There are things going on all over town,” says Brett Gambill, 27, a gay fourth-grade teacher who lives in Columbus, Ohio. “It’s a great city. It’s not too big. Everything is 20 minutes away. But it’s big enough that you don’t feel like you’re stuck in Middle America.”

What does this mean? Well, to me it means we are all human and it doesn’t matter whether you are gay or straight, caucasian or African American, male or female, or conservative or republican … we want the same thing as people.

And that is defined differently by each person and not neccesarily their sexuality. There have been numerous reports/complaints out of San Francisco’s Castro District about hetrosexuals moving into the community. Why? They love the life-style.

Why do I choose to live in Delaware, Ohio? Because tonight I had a meeting in downtown Columbus and in 35 minutes was back in my house. I can take my wife to a professional football, baseball, soccer, or hockey game and still enjoy tons of collegiate action (even those that don’t involve the Buckeyes) and we can shop at two premiere shopping facilities. Basically, we can do just about anything with a half-hour.

Does that sound strangely familiar to Brett’s response? Yep. Why? We are similar in our tastes. And considering that Delaware County is the 13th fastest growing county in the country, we aren’t alone.

So, what do you want from a community?
