Need a beer in Nelsonville? Here’s your chance to start your own brewery.
According to a posting on Craig’s List, found via MyHometownOhio, the original Hocking Valley Brewery is up for sale. The building is on the market for $145,000 in the community located about 87 miles southeast of Delaware.
Hopefully someone will take advantage of the opportunity to purchase this property and utilize its unique character. According to an article from The Athens News from March 2005, that was the plan of the Gary and John Clarke. They had planned to convert the building into a multi-use facility that would include a farmers’ market, indoor market, cafe, bakery, restaurant, music venue, community space and condominiums.
The News article continues:
Gary Clarke explained that he and his son plan to spend $1 million on the building, which actually will not be that hard to renovate because of the way it was built. The 100-year-old building has concrete floors that are still sound, and has brick walls and high ceilings.
“The walls are about 2 feet thick,” Gary Clarke said. The roof is collapsing at several spots in the building, but the developers were going to replace the roof anyway so that will just make that job easier, he added.
However, things have changed according to an e-mail from John Clarke, in response to what had happened to the plans for the multi-use facility. “Things change,” was John Clarke’s response.
Hopefully, things change for the better in this old facility.
According to John Clarke, it has been slow. “The ad was just posted the other day on Craig’s List. There have been no offers for the building yet. Plenty of offfers for the bricks though. Interested parties can contact me via e-mail.“
Not sure if that is interest in the building or the blocks. But we can hope it is the building.
