There are some thing in the news that really have my blood boiling …
- A woman in Columbus is reported to have drowned 650 cats and dogs that were given to her because she advertised herself as a foster provider. (Rita Price’s article from Saturday’s Dispatch)
- A dog was found in southern Ohio boiled and with its fur cut-off like a trapper would remove the pelt from a rodent. (Denise Wilson’s article from Friday’s Dayton Daily-News)
Toby and I are both on the same-page regarding this situation. What the hell (excuse the language)Â were these people thinking?
Don’t get me wrong. I totally understand the order of the world. We have Venison burger, sausage, and hot dogs in the freezer. Toby’s eaten racoon, squirel, rabbit, and muskrat, while seeing more carcases than most non-trappers could ever imagine (Toby’s Dad is the rodent-trapper for three counties).
So don’t get me wrong, this is not a PETA-supporting response. When you create “un-natural” situations with animals — and humans have — it allows for the wild-population to become too great and without managment by hunting or trapping there will be distemper and other diseases which create a much-worse situation.
Anyhow, back on topic.
We CAN control the population in our domesticated pets and animals — it is called spayed and neuturing. Hence, there shouldn’t be a huge problem with disease in domesticated animals.
The details on the second-case are sketchy at best, so it just seems a horrible murderous activity. There was another case in the same area last summer that is still not solved. It just makes me sick to think of someone doing this to a LIVE animal. If they were eating the dog (as is popular in some cultures) then okay — hey it’s not my bag, but I’ll survive –Â however a more humane way of doing this would be endorsed and suggested.
But, that is never mentioned in the articles.
A quote by Leland Gordon, executive director of the Animal Humane Friends Society in Trenton from the Daily-News story:
“People that do these kind of things to animals are sick and something is wrong with them,” he said.
“If people don’t like animals they need to stay away from them or if they have a problem animal they need to bring him to their local animal shelter,” Gordon said. “Don’t do stuff like this to them. This is wrong and it’s disgusting.”
And then we have the first story. This really bugs me, as my best-friend, Janie, is a rescue-Boxer from the Greater Ohio Boxer Rescue.
They are considering this one of the worst serial murders in history, and while I doubt that Ohio law would allow for capital punishment over pet-cruelty — this case would make me take look at it twice. I know that I’m part of Toby and Gretchen’s family as are millions of other pets.
But as Leland said, if you don’t want your pets there are THOUSANDS of places willing to take them off your hands. Call your local animal shelter or rescue operation and treat them with the respect they deserve.
A shout out to new blogger “Ducky” over at QuackleBees, whose post about the woman in Columbus got me to write this post.
