Delaware Ohio’s Best: Meat Shop

First it was Tuesday, then it was Wednesday, and this week it is Thursday. “Delaware Ohio’s Best” has continued to slide. However, don’t think it is in danger of sliding off my plate, the plate just has gotten a lot fuller.

This week’s biggest challenge was coming up with a topic that could match the response we received from last’s edition “Delaware Ohio’s Best: Small Towns”, and we have struggled with it. So here is our effort …

Delaware Ohio’s Best: Meat Shop

Hah, shocked you didn’t we, going back to food. However, this is an important thing to keep in mind in Delaware County. Driving through southern Delaware County – or Delaware itself for that matter – it is sometimes easy to forget the agricultural roots of this community. However a couple of shops have gone out of their way to keep Delaware’s heritage close to your heart – or stomach!

The Best of the Best: Ma Wilson

If you have ever headed north on U.S. 23 from Delaware towards the county line, you’ve seen the signs advertising Ma Wilson’s shop. We talked about stopping three-or-four times before we finally did. And now it is a routine place every couple of weeks to stop.

Their sausage is amazing, and lives up to the “No Fatty in our Patty” hype – so be careful frying it up, or you’ll burn it like Toby did his first batch. The pork chops are thick and fresh and the ribs are great. The store also offers a small cheese area and a collection of arts and crafts.

If you go, remember they are only open October to May.

Something New: Butcher Bloch

Sitting in a strip-mall along St. Rte. 37 on Sunbury’s East Side is the Butcher Bloch. The Bloc is relatively new, and offers a wide variety of Delaware-grown meat. Their pork and beef all comes from Delaware farms, while the poultry is from a farm in Holmes County.  They also offer some flash-frozen seafood and “ready-made” meals for those pressed for time.

Are They Still There: Walker Station

Located on the corner of St. Rte. 257 and U.S. 42 southeast of Delaware and on the banks of the Scioto River is a small country market. They sell beef grown at the family farm. The corner used to be the site of an up-scale restaurant and small market. The Delaware Gazette reported a few months back that the restaurant was on the market for $9 million — but the market was still open.

We always thought they had very good entres at the restaurant, just a little too expensive for the market in which it sits. Toby drove by the other day and the market didn’t look open; however he didn’t stop. Hopefully it will rebound, as the location would be great for the right type of restaurant.

Absentee Vote: London Meats

Located on – surprise – London Road on Delaware’s south-side is London Meats. I have never shopped at London, but one of our friends raves about the place. We had one of their steaks last summer and it was very good.

Did I miss Some Place?

Tell me! Leave a comment with your favorite place to purchase meats. I love to think that I’m involved in a lot of the aspects of Delaware County, but be sure to tell me if I’ve missed someone. I’m always on the look-out for new destinations.

That’s this week’s Delaware Ohio’s Best, look for next week’s edition on Tuesday (I promise!).
