So what have the Cows been up to this week? Well, I’m glad you asked and thanks to the efforts of general manager Jay Sokol. We can all find out.
Who are the Cows? The Cows are a wood-bat collegiate baseball team based at Ohio Wesleyan’s Littick Field. These players are amateurs that are essentially trying out fo the professional scouts all summer long.
2007 will be the team’s 16th season, so it has a long storied tradition in the community. The Cows have always had tremendous talent and this year’s team — at least on paper — is no exception.
The team will include Olentangy graduate John Baird who was named the Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League’s top-prospect last season by Baseball America.
Toby serves on the team’s advisory board and they are looking for those that are interested in hosting a player or helping with fund raising. If you are interested contact Toby and he’ll share the information with Jay.
I have to give credit to Columbus Best Blog’s Maureen McCabe for this idea!

Thanks for the mention…

Maureen — Great questions. The Cows have been running under the radar for a long time and are a hidden secret to people in Delaware County.
The team is not affiliated with the University, however we use OWU’s Littick Field as our home field. The league’s commissioner, Kim Lance, is a chemistry professor at OWU … so we have a lot of baseball lovers involved, and it just seems a lot of them are (or in my case were) associated with the University.
As to the players, it is summer league. They are all college kids from all over the country and either scouts or coaches have suggested them as being talented enough to play for one of these Major League Baseball approved leagues. We routinely have several scouts at every game and they are looking at them to be drafted in the next couple of years. For example, Baird will play with us this year — until draft day.
