The Delaware Gazette is reporting in today’s edition that the city of Delaware has given preliminary approval for Zaremba Group’s development on the city’s east side.
The proposal is believed to be one of the largest residential/commercial ventures in the city’s history, with more than 81 acres of commercial development and more than 68 acres of residential.
The commercial section will include at least two large retail anchors and the residential section will add more than 300 homes.
This is an interesting debate for those living on the east side.
- The positive is that the east side has been waiting for improvement for a long time. It While the south and west sides have expanded the east side has been waiting. Residents in Kensington have to drive the furthest in the city to reach a grocery store. If this goes through, not any more (recent reports have a Target Greatland among the anchors, so it wouldn’t “technically” be a closer grocery store…).
- However, on the downside is one of Delaware’s unique driving situations – the Point. The Point is the location where State Routes 36 and 37 merge and travel under a railroad on the far east side. This development would be built east of that point and add traffic to an already congested area.
This is going to be an interesting situation to watch for Delaware residents — and is sure to be a hot-topic at Trotters Coffe or Hamburger Inn on Wednesday morning.
