Delaware Ohio’s Best: Coffee Shop

As it appears that winter is finally upon us here in Delaware, is there anything as relaxing as walking into a community coffee shop?

What makes a great community coffee shop?

Well, it has to have an out-going and personable owner that’s always around. An ecletic or unique decor always helps. A loyal clientel that creates a warm — almost “local bar” flavor — for the shop. Oh yeah, and a great cup of coffee is a must.

So what’s the best coffee shop in Delaware?

The Best: Trotters Coffee Company

Just over a year old, Trotters Coffee Company has made a name for itself on Winter Street in downtown Delaware. The coffees are roasted fresh at its sister-store in Bellefontaine and a collection of “baskets” along the shops east wall allows customers to take the beans home with them to enjoy the wonderful taste — even when the shop is closed.

The decor is “classic” meets a chocolate and coffee inspiration. Wrought iron tables greet visitors enjoying their cup of joe in house and a collection of varieties are available for those getting their cup to go — a common scene for those that need a pick-me-up during their work day in downtown Delaware (including Toby!). The house-blend is Trotters Blend and there is always at least one other “stronger” blend on the fresh-brewed menu.

Honorable Mention: Mean Bean Caffeine Lounge

If a coffee shop wasn’t graded on its coffee, then the Mean Bean would be the best one in town. The Mean Bean has everything that makes for a great coffee shop. The decor is eclectic and fits in well with its younger visitors — mostly high school and Ohio Weselyan students — and the Wi-Fi connection keeps them coming back for more. The coffee is “okay” and for years would have been the best in town. But with even McDonalds now serving “high end” coffee, Mean Bean’s is a little flat. It is still a great place to visit and the coffee is definately drinkable.

So, when the temperature falls outside stop in for a hot beverage at one of our local coffee shops.
