Toby hates the word “resolution” and has for years sworn that he never makes them … instead he has “goals”. And this year, he seems to have some friends who have also made the realization that “resolutions” are worthless.
Did you know that 99 percent of resolutions fail? Or worse yet, that 80 percent fail by January 8?
Wow! That is quite the “attrition” rate.
What is the problem with resolutions? They have no defined statement. So, why not take the next step to make that a goal and create an attainable - and sustainable - goal for yourself. Well Toby was memed on Active Rain to discuss his “resolutions” for 2007.
The Top 5 Resolutions Goals for Toby in 2007:
- Resolution: Be Successful in Real Estate. Goal: Complete 35 Transactions and Earn Delaware (Ohio) Board of Realtors Rookie of the Year. How: Contact 10 prospects and send 10 notecards each day, while continuing to build my brand and take this thing to the next level.
- Resolution: Reach My Goal Weight. Goal: Lose 66 Pounds to Reach Goal Weight of 199. How: Track everything that I put into my body - limiting myself to 1600 calories - and exercise at least 45 minutes per day.
- Resolution: Become a better husband - and Hopefully a Father. Goal: Take at least one day off a week and spend more “quality” time with my wife and dog. How: Turn this darn computer off after 6 p.m. and focus on spending the time with my wife and dog and if God is willing we’ll be having a child this year.
- Resolution: Become More Organized. Goal: Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly reviews of my business. How: I’m a “creative” person that has always felt that being organized was a “bad thing”. Well now I’ve got sleeping problems and more because I’ve ignored this in the past. So I need to write things down more and become more analytical about my business and finances.
- Resolution: Read More. Goal: Read at Least One Book per Month. How: Visiting the Delaware County Library on a regular occasion and remembering that what I learn today will help me for the rest of my life!
So there it is. Toby’s Meme for 2007.
As to mine, well it is a little bit easier.
- Eat slower - shucks, already broke the resolution
- Sleep in the sun more - ahh, that sun just came through the window, so I need to go.

Those are great. I agree 100% on the importance of distinguishing “goals” versus “resolutions”.
My big resolution for 2007 is to improve my communications skills. With that in mind, here are three of my goals for 2007:
- write a blog post a day (365 posts)
- give a speech a month at Toastmasters (12 speeches)
- finish a book a week (52 books)
Trevor says I am a maniac for committing to a book a week, but thinking back on 2006 I must have read 20 or 30, so it seems do-able. The challenging part for me will be finishing the 52 books - I tend to get partway through only to be distracted by another volume, leaving me with piles of half-read books.

I was going to make a similar one about blogging — but it was to LIMIT myself to only one blog post a day. I was pushing nearly two a day in December and that is just too many.
The most amazing one is to FINISH a book a week. I am about the same way with a pile of half-read books sitting on the bookshelf. I have a pile of 15 books on my “reading list” and every time I turn around another one goes on the pile.
Good luck!

Too funny. To me, 1-2 a day seems just about right, provided they are quality posts. A lot of times I find myself stuck linking to and rehashing news stories… trying to get away from that, or at least come up with some original perspective on whatever I’m writing about.
Good luck to you as well!

My problem is that I’m spending more time writing at times than developing my business. If I am closing two deals a week and can post two blogs a day, then I’m cool with it. But when I have way more posts than closings … that’s a scary sign!
